Have you ever wondered what the temporomandibular joint is? A temporomandibular joint, also called a TMJ, is the joint in your jaw that is accountable for healthy eating, chewing, and moving your jaw up and down. Without your TMJ, chewing food or talking would become difficult.

If you are beginning to feel any pain in your jaw, try to use heat packs for the pain. If swelling occurs use ice packs to reduce the swelling. Stress and tension play a large role in how jaw pressure is triggered. Thus, try using meditative techniques such as yoga and relaxing music to reduce any pressure and tension that may exist within your jaw.

A TMD could be the result of an underlying condition or disorder within your mouth or body. If you suffer from bruxism you may be at a higher risk of a TMD. In addition, remove all bad habits or foods that can cause additional pain to your jaw. This including biting your nails, chewing bubble gum, and eating chewy or tough foods such as steak.
