You know that it’s important for you to care for your teeth. You’ve probably heard that if you don’t care for your teeth, you could find yourself with a cavity. However, did you know that if you don’t care for your cavity well, the cavity could grow and ultimately spread further into your tooth? This is a serious problem because injuries in the center of your tooth can be more difficult to treat. In fact, your options are usually only root canal therapy or extracting your tooth.

Our team recommends root canal therapy when your pulp is infected or inflamed, whether it was caused by a cavity or not. During root canal therapy, our team will remove the infected area and seal the tooth. This treatment actually saves your tooth, though you may need a crown to protect it from further damage. And since crowns are designed to match your natural teeth, your repaired tooth should blend beautifully in your smile.

While root canal therapy is used to save a tooth, an extraction is usually recommended for a tooth that can’t be saved. This treatment is generally recommended for a tooth with compromised structure or a severe fracture. Similarly, if you don’t treat cavities quickly enough, your tooth could die—making tooth extraction a necessity. Again, whenever possible, our team recommends saving a damaged tooth rather than removing it.

If you have more questions about either of these treatments, please don’t hesitate to give Legacy Trails Dental a call at 214-227-1000. Dr. Afshin Azmoodeh and our team will be happy to examine your smile and offer you personalized advice. We’re excited to hear from you soon!
