Is Dental Implant Surgery a Painful Procedure?

Even after you’ve decided that you want dental implants to replace your missing teeth, you can begin to wonder if the surgery will hurt. No one likes the idea of painful dental work. However, instead of backing out of your decision because of fear, learn why you have nothing to worry about when it comes to receiving your new smile.

What Can You Expect From Dental Implant Surgery?

On the day of your procedure, your implant dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the areas of your mouth undergoing treatment. Additional dental sedation (i.e., nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation) can be provided if you are nervous or fearful.

Once you are numb and cannot feel your dentist poking or prodding your gums, they will begin opening the gums before positioning each dental implant into the bone. You will feel no pain during this process; instead, you will remain unbothered by your surroundings.

Will There Be Pain After the Procedure?

Naturally, after the anesthesia wears off, you can expect to feel some slight discomfort. This is normal and to be expected. After all, any dental work that requires opening your gums and bone will need time to heal. Discomfort and soreness are often part of this process, so you will likely receive a prescription from your dentist for medication you can take to alleviate this problem.

If you do not, you may buy an over-the-counter pain reliever to help manage discomfort over the next several days. You can also use a cold compress to reduce swelling and perform saltwater rinses to minimize pain and clear out any harmful bacteria. (Remember not to spit.)

Are Dental Implants Worth It?

When you consider the surgery and post-procedural recovery that is required with dental implants, the ultimate question remains: Are they worth it? The answer for most people is a resounding yes. Why? Because the temporary soreness and discomfort you feel afterward eventually dissipate. This means that you can begin to enjoy the benefits of your new teeth, including everything from no food restrictions to a lifespan of 30+ years.

Instead of letting fear of surgery keep you from getting what dentists believe is the gold standard for tooth replacement, trust that your team will keep you comfortable from start to finish.
