How to Care for Your Senior Parent After Their Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure, but older adults may need a little extra assistance during recovery. Seniors may have medications, mobility concerns, or other factors that require additional planning after treatment. Providing attentive care during the first few days can help your parent stay comfortable and follow their dentist’s instructions. Here are some ways to help your senior parent recover after a tooth extraction.

Help Them Follow Their Dentist’s Instructions

Before leaving the dental office, make sure you understand the aftercare instructions. Your parent may need reminders about medications, gauze use, eating, oral hygiene, and activities to avoid.

If sedation was used, your parent may be tired or temporarily groggy afterward. Arrange transportation home and follow the dental team’s instructions about supervision and activities.

Prepare Soft, Nutritious Foods

Chewing may be uncomfortable immediately after an extraction, so have soft foods available. Depending on their dentist’s recommendations, options may include yogurt, applesauce, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, smoothies eaten without a straw, and soft soups that aren’t too hot.

Good nutrition and adequate fluids are important during recovery. Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or very hot foods that could irritate the extraction site.

Encourage Plenty of Rest

Your parent should take it easy after the procedure. Help them avoid strenuous activity for the period recommended by their dentist.

If possible, make sure they have a comfortable place to rest with their head slightly elevated. This may help minimize swelling during the first day.

Help with Oral Hygiene

Keeping the mouth clean is important, but the extraction site needs to be treated gently. Your dentist will provide specific instructions about when and how to brush, rinse, and clean around the area.

Avoid vigorous rinsing or disturbing the extraction site, particularly during the early healing period. Your parent may need assistance if limited mobility makes brushing or other oral care difficult.

Watch for Warning Signs

Some soreness, swelling, and minor bleeding can occur after an extraction. However, keep an eye out for symptoms that seem unusual or worsen rather than improve.

Contact the dental office if your parent experiences persistent or heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pain, significant swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, or other concerning symptoms. Follow the dentist’s instructions regarding when to seek urgent or emergency care.

Your support can make a significant difference while your senior parent heals after a tooth extraction. If you are unsure about any part of your parent’s recovery, contact their dental team for personalized guidance.
