How Can TMJ Disorder Cause Ringing in Your Ears?

If you’ve been hearing a ringing sound in your ears, you have a condition known as tinnitus. This issue is largely associated with hearing loss, but this is far from the only possible explanation. In some cases, tinnitus could actually be related to a TMJ disorder. How exactly can an issue with your jaw joints affect your ears? And what steps can you take to address your symptoms?

What is a TMJ Disorder?

A TMJ disorder affects the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). These joints are what allow you to move your lower jaw whenever you eat or speak. An overworked or injured TMJ can cause serious discomfort in your jaw and make it difficult to open and close your mouth. The cause of a TMJ disorder can vary, but common risk factors include teeth grinding, arthritis, and physical trauma.

The Possible Link Between TMJ Disorder and Tinnitus

Your inner ear contains a spiral-shaped part known as the cochlea. The function of the cochlea is to convert sound waves into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain and interpreted as sound. The cochlea relies on special hair cells to pick up sound vibrations. If these hair cells are damaged in any way, it can lead to tinnitus.

What does this have to do with TMJ disorder? As it happens, the TMJs are located very close to the cochlea. Consequently, if the jaw joints become irritated or inflamed due to TMJ disorder, it can cause issues with the cochlea, thereby leading to tinnitus.

What Can You Do About Tinnitus and TMJ Disorder?

If your tinnitus is the result of a TMJ disorder, treating the latter could help alleviate the former. Once your TMJ disorder has been diagnosed by an expert, you can pursue an appropriate form of treatment.

Depending on the cause and severity of your TMJ-related issues, you might benefit from wearing an occlusal splint. This is a type of oral appliance that is meant to be worn when you go to bed. An occlusal splint can move your lower jaw slightly forward so that it doesn’t put as much pressure on your TMJs, giving them a chance to rest and recover.

You don’t need to force yourself to live with tinnitus or other side effects of TMJ disorder. If you talk with your dentist, they can help you determine the best way to address the issue with your jaw joints so that you can find lasting relief from your symptoms.
