3 Tips for Keeping Your Sweet Tooth Under Control This Halloween

If you have a sweet tooth, it can be all too easy to overindulge in candy around Halloween. Needless to say, this can have serious consequences for your dental health; consuming too much sugar can significantly raise your risk of developing cavities and gum disease. If you want to prevent these types of oral health issues, it’s important to get your sugar cravings under control. Here are 3 tips that can make this easier.

1. Maintain a Healthy, Filling Diet

Sometimes your sweet tooth may be linked to a lack of calories. When you don’t eat as much as you should, your body may start craving sugar as a quick source of energy. This can make candy and other sugary treats even more tempting.

If you’re trying to manage your sweet tooth around Halloween, you should make a point of eating three healthy, filling meals a day to ensure that your body is getting the calories it needs. Make sure that you eat plenty of foods that are high in protein. This nutrient helps regulate blood sugar and plays a critical role in suppressing sugar cravings.

2. Reduce the Amount of Candy You Have

The more candy you have around, the easier it is to give in to your sweet tooth. Thus, it may be a good idea to limit your Halloween candy stash. Consider giving some of the excess candy to a worthy cause, such as Treats for Troops.

If you want to protect your smile, it pays to be somewhat picky about the type of candy you keep around. For example, sticky candies tend to be especially bad for teeth because they stay in the mouth for a long time, giving harmful oral bacteria more of an opportunity to feed off the sugar they contain. In comparison, chocolate is safer for your smile since it doesn’t stick to the teeth.

3. Go for a Jog

Research indicates that short stretches of physical activity may reduce sugar cravings. As such, jogging for around 15 minutes could go a long way toward helping you beat the temptation to overindulge in sugar. And of course, a good workout can benefit your overall health in other ways as well.

If you’re proactive about controlling your sugar cravings, you should be able to enjoy all the fun of Halloween without having to worry about dealing with cavities and other oral health complications later.
